HINKLE-GARTON FARMSTEAD

The Hinkle-Garton Farmstead is home to Bloomington Restorations, Inc., a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic architecture and old neighborhoods in Bloomington and Monroe County.
The grounds committee asked MC-IRIS to access the invasive plants which were invading the fence rows, pastures and the two homesteads on site. Volunteers from MC-IRIS used GPS units to map the major invasive plant outbreaks. This data will be used in setting priorities and creating a long term management plan for the farm.
The first control project started in the fall of 2009 and focused on the removal of Bush Honeysuckle which blocked an important view shed from the house to the rear pasture. Eco Logic LLC donated the use of their Fecon forestry mower with an operator and laborers to efficiently remove approximately 2 acres of dense Bush Honeysuckle. During the summer of 2010 the majority of the stumps had re-sprouted with new foliage, these were treated with a 3% solution of Glyphosate.
