Callery Pear Replacement Project on the B-Line Trail
In 2009, callery pear trees were planted as landscaping along the B-Line Trail. MC-IRIS members were concerned about this because callery pear - the parent species of many popular cultivars like Bradford pear, Cleveland Select pear, and Chanticleer pear has been shown to be invasive in forests and openlands in the Eastern U.S. In fact, it is estimated that 80% of the Crane Naval Reserve acreage has callery pear seedlings in the forest understory, and in many places they are the dominant species. MC-IRIS is working with the City of Bloomington to raise funds to replace the callery pears along the B-Line. The first four trees were replaced with native trees on May 22, 2010 and as funds are raised, more will be replaced.
How can I help?
Don't plant callery pear cultivars on your land, and consider removing those you have in your yard to keep them from spreading. You can also contribute to the Bloomington Tree Fund (please write "MC-IRIS – B-Line replacement tree project" in the notes line of the check) to fund the replacement of more callery pears along the B-Line.
